Using MDA to Manage Metadata

An Overview of MOFTM, XMI®, and JMI

Audience: IT executives, IT managers, senior architects, and senior developers

Duration: Half day

Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of UML is helpful but not required.

Abstract: This seminar provides an architectural overview of the MDA technologies that support model-driven metadata management. It explains the increasing importance and volume of metadata in today’s enterprises as well as the fragmentation in how metadata is managed. It discusses the OMG’s Meta Object Facility (MOF) and XMI standards in some detail, and describes how they are related to UMLTM and XML. It also covers Sun Microsystem’s Java Metadata Interface (JMI) standard, which is closely related to MOF. The tutorial also examines why MDA must support multiple modeling languages and explains the fundamental role that MOF plays in folding languages other than UML into the MDA space.
